It all started with a mango. I spotted it at the grocery store, admired its rich hues and interesting shape, and decided to bring it home for further study.
Thus was born the Ordinary – Extraordinary series in 2017.
The seemingly ordinary and common food objects that I continued to bring into the studio began to take on new life, bursting with color, emotion, and drama. I also wanted more and more to depict them in a natural state. When we left for vacation and my onion sprouted, I couldn't have been more thrilled. I started forcing bulbs and germinating seeds for artistic purposes (they all later retired into my garden), and sourcing/growing foods direct so that I could have subjects with leaves or twigs attached.
There is beauty in everything, the key is remembering to look for it.
